Have you ever walked in total darkness? Were you afraid of the dark when you were a child? Darkness is a scary place. Many years ago I went to a Women’s Retreat in the beautiful mountains of Santa Cruz, California. We were staying in a old cabin in the woods. There were no lights outside. We were told to carry our flashlights at night so we could find our place at night. Our group forgot to bring one. We headed in the early evening to the sanctuary to worship and listen to the message. The evening program ended and it was dark outside. We also forgot to leave a light on at the cabin. It was pitch dark. We couldn’t see a thing. No bright moon that night either. We prayed together and asked God to protect us from predators and to help us find our cabin. We held hands as we walked with careful steps. After a while we began to climb the steps in hope that we had reached our cabin. Thank God we found it and as soon as we turned the light on, we felt safe.
Jesus came as a light into the world to make us feel safe and to save us from total darkness, which is Hell. Matthew 8:12 says, “But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”As we put our faith and trust in Jesus, He will be our light and guide us. He is our safe place in this world.
